Designs
This page shows an example of the design process from original, through cutting drawing, to finished inlay.
In this case, the design was taken from one of the many books on Celtic art and shows a simple triangular knotwork, but this could be an original sketch or even a photograph. |

The design was scanned and I then used a CAD program to create an accurate cutting drawing.
Although all of the shell is cut by hand, it is much easier to work from this type of drawing because I can then scale the design to the exact size required without de-grading the lines.

The shell pieces were then cut and assembled using the drawing as a template. Finally the design was inlayed. In this case, into the bridge of my acoustic guitar. The finished inlay consisted of 21 individual pieces and is about the size of a 5 pence piece. |
